Celebrating renewal, family, good fortune, and the arrival of spring, students from all five South Pasadena Unified School District (SPUSD) campuses recently recognized the Lunar New Year and festival.
Marengo Elementary Mandarin dual-immersion students led an assembly on Friday, February 20, with songs and recitals for their classmates, teachers, staff, and parents. Many participants wore red and/or traditional, cultural attire. Arroyo Vista and Monterey Hills Elementary School students enjoyed a variety of foods, crafts, games, and lion dances to celebrate the new year.
Middle school Mandarin dual-immersion students performed the lion dance during lunch, made homemade dumplings for students and staff, and conducted interviews in Mandarin and English, while students in the Chinese language program at the high school practiced calligraphy, enjoyed “firecrackers” (bubble wrap), and shared red envelopes, among other projects.
Activities are designed to teach students about cultural diversity and foster a respectful, inclusive environment. Thank you to all the staff, teachers, and PTA volunteers who assisted with these activities.
Happy Year of the Horse!
